Understanding and Identifying Dyscalculia and Math Learning Disabilities - 34455

This virtual session is designed for diagnosticians who seek a deeper understanding of dyscalculia and math learning disabilities. Participants will explore the definition of dyscalculia, review leading theoretical models, and gain insights into how these models inform assessment practices. An evidence-based assessment plan will be presented, emphasizing tools and approaches that provide a comprehensive understanding of a student’s math abilities. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to identify dyscalculia and other math-related learning disabilities, interpret assessment data effectively, and make informed decisions to support students’ learning needs. This session is aligned with the evaluation components of the TEA-required self-assessment.

Objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be able to dentify the defining characteristics and symptoms of dyscalculia and distinguish it from other math-related learning difficulties. Participants will describe and apply two theoretical models of dyscalculia to support accurate identification and diagnosis, and develop an assessment plan that incorporates specific tools and strategies to evaluate mathematical abilities to identify dyscalculia in students.
