Many young children engage in challenging behavior in the course of early development. The majority of these children respond to developmentally appropriate behavior management techniques, but some will need more specialized interventions. This workshop outlines a tiered approach utilizing positive behavioral interventions to decrease undesirable behaviors and increase desirable behaviors in early childhood classrooms. Tier 1: Universal Promotion (for ALL) Responsive relationships and high-quality environments, practices needed to ensure the social development of ALL children Tier 2: Secondary Prevention (for SOME) Targeted social emotional strategies to prevent problems for children at risk of challenging behavior Tier 3: Tertiary Intervention (for FEW) Individualized and intensive interventions to the very small number of children with persistent challenges
