The Five Elements of Reading and Deaf Education Virtual - 36175

This session provides an overview of the similarities and differences in literacy development between children who are deaf or hard of hearing and children with typical hearing through the five key elements of reading – phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Strategies to support targeted skills in each key element area to help students who are deaf and hard of hearing move beyond emergent literacy and closer to conventional literacy will be discussed.
