American Sign Language Rhyming and Literacy Fun! Virtual - 36128

Rhyme and rhythm increase young children’s engagement, executive functioning skills, language awareness, vocabulary, and emergent literacy and are strongly linked to reading achievement. This workshop, designed for Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, paraprofessionals, and related service staff serving deaf or hard of hearing children, ages birth through early childhood, introduces ways to provide children access to rhyme and rhythm that capitalize on the linguistic and cultural benefits of American Sign Language and Deaf culture. The presenters will discuss the history of ASL rhyme and rhythm and its linguistic patterns, research on the role of ASL rhyme and rhythm in facilitating language, and creative ways to engage children in language play at home. This workshop addresses the Instructional Strategies component of the Special Education Self-Assessment.
