RBIS in ACTION: Normalizing Productive Struggle Grade 3-5 - 35750
The RBIS in ACTION series invites educators to explore and apply research-based instructional strategies (RBIS) that deepen student learning and engagement in mathematics.
This session designed for Grade 3-5 math educators highlights the importance of normalizing productive struggle as a critical strategy for developing resilient, independent mathematical thinkers. Using problem-solving tasks as a context, educators will explore how to design and facilitate experiences that encourage students to persevere and make sense of challenging ideas. Participants will engage in routines such as 3 Reads and Numberless Word problems, which provide structure for deep sense-making and promote equitable participation. We will also discuss the power of creating exemplar responses and anticipating student responses to guide feedback and support. Throughout the session, participants will capture key insights and practical strategies in their RBIS journal, leaving with tools to foster a classroom culture where struggle is celebrated as part of learning.
