RBIS in ACTION: Deepening Student Learning by Balancing Conceptual and Procedural Understanding - 35749

The RBIS in ACTION series invites educators to explore and apply research-based instructional strategies (RBIS) that deepen student learning and engagement in mathematics. In this session, K-5 math educators will focus on the strategy of balancing conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, using composing and decomposing numbers as the central content. Together, we will examine the progression of learning outlined in the TEKS and discuss how concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations strengthen neural networks and support deep understanding. Participants will experience and analyze routines such as Connecting Representations and Same and Different to see how they promote both conceptual depth and procedural skill. Throughout the session, educators will capture insights and practical ideas in their RBIS journal, leaving with concrete steps to apply in their classrooms.
