Math on a Dial: Turning up the Volume on Mathematical Thinking in 5th-8th Grade (GT Summit) - 31281
This session is part of the ESC Region 11 GT Summit, a one-day event designed to offer educators a personalized GT Update tailored to their specific needs through engaging and targeted learning experiences. This session counts as 1.5 hours of GT Update credit with a focus on differentiated curriculum for gifted learners. Math on a Dial focuses on strategically restricting information, fostering creativity, and promoting thoughtful analysis. In this session, 5th through 8th-grade math educators will explore innovative strategies that provide gifted students opportunities to engage with math in a deeper and more meaningful way. Using slow reveal graphs and numberless word problems, teachers will guide students to create and utilize novel problem-solving strategies to increase rigor. These approaches prioritize understanding the context and identifying relationships before jumping into calculations. By controlling the flow of information, students are forced to utilize higher-order thinking to determine patterns and situations, challenging students to develop strategies based on understanding rather than mere calculation. The session will emphasize the importance of fostering an environment where students gain confidence in solving complex problems with greater clarity and insight.
