RBIS in Action: Productive Struggle for Secondary Math - 35308

This professional development session focuses on strengthening instructional practices aligned with RBIS 4: Productive Struggle. This session will focus on emphasizing the development of a student-centered learning environment that fosters critical thinking, perseverance, and deep mathematical understanding. Teachers will explore strategies that encourage students to solve problems in multiple ways, reinforcing that there is often more than one valid approach. Participants will also reflect on their use of praise, ensuring they affirm student effort equally—whether the solution is correct or not—to promote a growth mindset and encourage resilience in learning. The session will further support teachers in designing opportunities for collaborative problem solving, where students use a variety of representations and explain their reasoning. Teachers will learn how to allow time for productive struggle, intentionally avoiding premature intervention so students can build confidence and problem-solving skills. Additionally, the session will provide tools for using effective questioning strategies, such as probing guidance and affordances, to help students move forward in their thinking without giving away the answers. These practices collectively support the creation of a rigorous and equitable classroom aligned with the core tenets of RBIS 4.
