The Climb to Fluency: Exploring Number Sense Beyond Speed (GT Summit) - 30376
This session is part of the ESC Region 11 GT Summit, a one-day event designed to offer educators a personalized GT Update tailored to their specific needs through engaging and targeted learning experiences. This session counts as 1.5 hours of GT Update credit with a focus on differentiated curriculum for gifted learners. Advanced learners may approach number sense with a natural inclination toward flexible thinking, quickly recognizing patterns, and applying creative strategies, but they may also develop an over-reliance on speed and competition, which can hinder deeper mathematical reasoning and perseverance. In this session, discover how to guide young learners toward strong number sense and fact fluency while meeting the needs of all students, including advanced learners. This session will equip Pre-K – 2 teachers with engaging, developmentally appropriate strategies to build mathematical understanding and confidence. Explore hands-on activities, games, and routines that foster deep connections with numbers, challenge advanced thinkers, and empower all students to solve problems flexibly and fluently. Let’s shift the focus from speed to sense and inspire a love of math in every learner!
