Evaluation Considerations for Students who are Deafblind, Visually Impaired or Blind and Deaf or Hard of Hearing - 37142

A practical session for Diagnosticians, SLPs, School Psychologists, TSVIs, and TDHHs focused on the evaluation process for students who are Deafblind, Visually Impaired or Blind, and Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Participants will review different types of hearing and vision differences to understand that louder and bigger do not always guarantee access. The session will emphasize identifying appropriate accommodations and modifications based on varied sensory needs and communication modes, ensuring evaluations capture a student’s true skills rather than the impact of sensory differences. Additional components include guidance on collaborative practices throughout the evaluation process, considerations from the Legal Framework that influence assessment planning and decision-making, and a review of key information provided by assessment publishers to support valid, legally sound, and equitable evaluations.

Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will identify various types of hearing and vision differences to understand that "louder and bigger" does not guarantee access. Participants will be able to explain how these differences impact the validity of standard evaluation results and analyze a student’s specific sensory and communication needs to determine the appropriate assessment tools and accommodations needed to capture a student’s true skills during the evaluation process.
