RBIS in ACTION: Supporting Coherent Learning Through Word Problem Structures - 36261

The RBIS in ACTION series invites educators to explore and apply research-based instructional strategies (RBIS) that deepen student learning and engagement in mathematics. In this session, educators will focus on the strategy of coherence, using word problem structures as the central content. Together, we will examine the progression of learning outlined in the TEKS and discuss how connecting problem types across grade levels—such as joining, separating, part-part-whole, and comparison—builds a continuous and connected story of mathematical understanding. Participants will explore models and strategies to support student reasoning across problem types and plan ways to intentionally connect new learning to students’ prior knowledge. Throughout the session, educators will capture insights and practical ideas in RBIS toolkit cards, leaving with a concrete resource to utilize in their classrooms.
