Dr. Schultz Presents: Distinguishing Developmental Delay from Disability (In-Person) - 34402
Recent policy changes in Texas allows a student to be considered “developmentally delayed” until 9 years old. When policy change occurs, practice must shift. This session will review the current policy, review typical development, and discuss strategies to help distinguish “delay from disability” to avoid using developmental delay to “delay” proper identification. This session is aligned with the evaluation components of the TEA-required self-assessment.

Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to discuss state policy changes allowing the use of “developmentally delayed” classification until age 9 and examine its impact on evaluation practices. Participants will analyze typical developmental milestones to better distinguish developmental delays from disabilities, discuss strategies for accurate identification, and review strategies to ensure developmental delay is not used to postpone a disability diagnosis.
