This interactive workshop series will cover key areas such as language-rich classrooms, academic vocabulary instruction, language proficiency standards, and an overview of Content-Based Language Instruction (CBLI). DAY ONE: Session 1: Developing Language Acquisition Through Language-Rich Classrooms (3 hours) Explore how to create an engaging, language-rich environment where students can thrive. Learn practical techniques for promoting language acquisition through meaningful interactions, visual supports, and cooperative learning strategies. This session emphasizes fostering a classroom atmosphere that nurtures language growth in diverse learners. Session 2: Building Academic Language Proficiency Through Vocabulary Instruction (3 hours) Dive into effective vocabulary instruction strategies that support students’ academic language development. This session will cover techniques for teaching high-frequency academic words, strategies for building word knowledge, and ways to integrate vocabulary instruction into content areas for lasting language proficiency. DAY TWO: Session 3: ELPS: From Theory to Practice (3 hours) Learn how to implement the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) in your classroom. This session bridges theory with practical applications, giving you the tools to align your teaching with ELPS and address the specific language needs of EBs across proficiency levels. Session 4: CBLI Overview (3 hours) Gain an introduction to Content-Based Language Instruction (CBLI), a teaching approach that integrates language learning with academic content. Understand how CBLI promotes both content knowledge and language proficiency and walk away with strategies to implement this approach.
