Civics in the Digital Age: Teaching Media Literacy, Discourse, and Informed Citizenship - 36295
Join us for an engaging and practice-focused professional development session designed to strengthen social studies instruction through the lenses of media literacy, technology civics, and civil discourse. In an era of rapid information flow and increasingly complex civic participation, educators play a critical role in helping students navigate multiple perspectives and communicate their thinking clearly.
During this interactive session, participants will:
Deepen Media Literacy Skills: Explore strategies for teaching students to evaluate sources, recognize bias, analyze digital content, and engage responsibly with information across platforms.
Understand Technology Civics: Learn how to integrate lessons on digital citizenship, online civic participation, and the impact of technology on democratic processes.
Facilitate Meaningful Civil Discourse: Practice structured discussion routines and protocols that support respectful dialogue, active listening, and argumentation grounded in evidence.
Bring Forward Multiple Perspectives: Utilize inquiry-driven tools to help students consider diverse viewpoints and develop empathy within historical and contemporary contexts.
Strengthen Short Constructed Responses: Examine high-quality examples, scoring guides, and classroom routines that support students in articulating evidence-based reasoning concisely and effectively.
