Enhancing Reading and Writing Skills for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Review of Integrative Teaching Strategies - 35500

This session, grounded in the Nine Literacy Puzzle Pieces framework developed by the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University, will explore effective, research-informed strategies to enhance reading and writing instruction for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Participants will examine each "puzzle piece" and discover how the pieces interconnect to support a comprehensive literacy foundation. Through interactive activities, real-world examples, and hands-on practice, educators will learn how to apply these principles to create inclusive, engaging, and language-rich environments that foster literacy growth in learners who are DHH. This session is ideal for teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, reading specialists, speech-language pathologists, and support staff working with students who are DHH in a variety of educational settings. This session addresses Special Education Self-Assessment indicators 7 and 12.
