ONLINE: Just Give Him the Whale: Using Passions, Areas of Expertise, and Strengths to Support Students with Autism (BOOK STUDY) Virtual - 31054
Do you know someone who loves whales? Or ceiling fans? Or elevators? Most of us do know learners with specific interests. Often, however, these favorites of students with autism are not celebrated but seen as annoying, problematic or in need of "extinction." Just Give Him the Whale! is packed from start to finish with unforgettable stories based on the authors' experience, firsthand perspectives from people with autism themselves, research-based recommendations that are easy to use right away, and sample forms teachers can adapt for use in their own classrooms. An enjoyable read with an eye-opening message, this short book will have a long-lasting impact on teachers' understanding of autism and on their students' social and academic success.
Participants will meet every week from March 23 - April 20 (3:30 - 4:15 p.m.) via Zoom.
**On April 13 (3:30 - 5:00 p.m.) Dr. Paula Kluth will join us live!! - In this presentation, Dr. Kluth will explore alternative perspectives and will focus specifically on how they can serve as supports, teaching tools, inspirations, and hobbies. Participants will learn how honoring fascinations and using them as tools can help teachers calm, comfort, teach, inspire, and connect with their students with autism labels.**
ASHA CEUs will be provided for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
Join us as we work through Dr. Paula Kluth's book, "Just Give Him the Whale: Using Passions, Areas of Expertise, and Strengths to Support Students with Autism."
