2024 Cane Quest for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired - 33056

Cane Quest is a challenging orientation and mobility contest for students who are blind or visually impaired in grades 3-12. Contestants will be divided into three categories: (1) Scouts, grades 3 - 6; (2) Explorers, grades 7 - 9; and (3) Trailblazers, grades 10 - 12. Scouts team up with a sighted adult and earn coins as they navigate a route that demonstrates mastery of basic orientation, mobility skills, and proper sighted guide techniques within the boundaries of a school or agency. Explorers and Trailblazers will be challenged to safely complete routes in their community using proper travel techniques and appropriate cane skills with only auditory instructions. To ensure safety, contestants are monitored by trained professionals at all times during the event. Grace Medina, a young adult with a visual impairment who is navigating college independently, will be the guest speaker. This event is in partnership with Lighthouse for the Blind of Forth Worth, and it addresses Special Education Self Assessment indicators 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 15, 21, 22, and 23.
