Supporting Transgender Students - LPC Credit Only - 27451

The current pandemic has highlighted the important role that educators play in supporting the social-emotional well-being of our students, especially those who may be at higher risk. The CDC (2020) reports that youth who self-identify as LGBTQ are twice as likely as their peers to experience major depression, anxiety, self-harm, and attempted suicide. In a study specifically targeting LGBTQ high school youth, one-third of the participants met diagnostic criteria for mental disorders and/or had attempted suicide (Russell & Fish, 2020). In this session, an expert in specialized populations will explain transgender identity; explore what it means to be a student who identifies as transgender/gender diverse; will help us better understand transgender terminology and gender etiquette, and will share best practices so that we can more confidently support not only this group but all students.
