DESCRIPTION:Assistive technology does not “just work” because it is purchased or added to an IEP. It works when it is thoughtfully selected and meaningfully implemented based on student evaluation data. This full-day session explores why strong assistive technology (AT) evaluations are a legal requirement under IDEA, a critical element of IEP compliance, and a powerful driver of student independence and educational outcomes. Participants will examine the purpose and components of high-quality AT evaluations, explore the wide range of AT tools currently available, and learn how to move beyond trial-and-error decision making. The session will conclude with a forward-looking discussion of evolving evaluation practices and a preview of a comprehensive AT evaluation framework currently under development.
