DESCRIPTION:Functional Communication Training (FCT) is an evidence-based intervention designed to reduce interfering behaviors by teaching individuals more appropriate and effective ways to communicate their needs. While FCT is frequently recommended as a behavior support strategy, it is often misunderstood or implemented incorrectly. Replacing challenging behavior with communication involves much more than simply telling a student to "use your words." Effective FCT requires a systematic process that begins with identifying the function of the behavior and then explicitly teaching, prompting, and reinforcing a communication response that serves the same purpose. When implemented with fidelity, FCT can lead to meaningful improvements in communication, independence, and behavior.
